Cousin Dr Richard,
How delightful to hear from you. I have been continually searching for our
Couch ancestors and trying to determine exactly when they came to this
country. One Thomas Crouch or Couch lived in Jamestown and arrived there
earlier than 1623 when he was recorded in the Jamestown census there. Most
refer to him as Crouch. More recently, I have discovered another Thomas
Couch. This Thomas Couch was described thusly: "Aug 29, Sept 1, 1684
Shippers by the Charles of Plymouth, Mr. Edward Blagg, bound from Plymouth
for Virginia...(PRO:E190/1048/8)". This Thomas sounds promising.
In another line I have been tracing from my Thomas & Elizabeth Couch
(Brunswick County, VA ca 1720) their son Thomas Couch Jr and wife Mary Ann
of Orange County, NC and Enoree, SC we find a son named Drury. He is the
ancestor of the most noted Couch I have run across, Harvey Couch, of
Arkansas.
In he Biograpy of Harvey Couch by Wilson (1947) Harvey's gg grandfather
William Couch says his Couch family was in new england in 1642 and in
Virginia by 1700s. I do not know his source but if correct then we may be
somehow related to the Couch family who arrived in Conneticut around 1740.
This family has a lots of Thomas Couches. I have a little history of this
CT Couch family in my book and I have been trying to link up with them
somehow. No success as yet.
Good luck on your new teaching year. I have now been retired seven years and
retirement is the best job I ever had. No one absolutely NO ONE is around
telling you what to do, complaining and provoking any stress. It is simply
wonderful. Try it you will like it.
Please keep in touch and keep me informed if you find any connections. I
just yesterday told a woman from Kentucky that your family from Buckingham
County, VA was probably the first Couch family in Kentucky. Was I correct
about that (Thomas John)?
Robert H. Couch another 65 year old Auburn Couch man.
