Kay....and all...

Here is a chronological list of Genforum messages describing my search for
my grandmother's Couch line. I got my original info from other family
members who worked on our line. They told me that John F was born in 1870
and his father, William was born abt 1845. Using these two dates, I zeroed
in on the Irvin Couch line.

# 1 My original message.
My grandmother, Mary Elcie Couch was born in Ardmore, Okla in 1892. Father
John Couch b. 1870 in Ark. Mother Lizzie(probably Elizabeth) Brinkley b. abt
1870 in Ark. John's father was a William Couch b Abt 1845 in Ark or Georgia.
I think it is possible John's father was Irvin Couch b Abt 1823 in Georgia,
Md. Lucy Rose...

# 2 A coupla replies by Ray Hatton suggesting the Lewis Couch/Zenoria
Brinkley connection..
Jess, You might try the 1880 U. S. Census for Craig twp, Van Buren County,
Arkansas. There is a Lewis Couch, age 57, born in Tennessee, wife's name
Linda? Louisa?, age 34, born in Tennessee. Lewis Couch's mother, Charity
Couch, age 82, born in Kentucky. Lewis' children were: Charity E., 18,
William, 12, Nancy, 8, Carroll, 7, Lizzie, 4, and Callie Louisa Couch, 2.
Callie was my grandmother.

#3
Jess, In a previous message I suggested you check the 1870 Census for Van
Buren, AR. My great grandfather William Lewis Couch married Zenoria
Brinkley. I believe Elizabeth to be her sister, and that she married William
Lewis Couch' brother John F. Couch. I believe Elizabeth and John lived in
southwestern Oklahoma near Davis. My great grandmother, Zenoria, is buried
in the Blanchard, Oklahoma cemetery.
I also have found that John F. Couch was of Cherokee ancestry and did have a
Cherokee Roll number.

And finally, my latest message to Ray Hatton.
Hi Ray...thanx for your reply...you did indeed reply to a Genforum mesage
suggesting I check on the Zenoria Brinkley and Elizabeth Brinkley
connection. I went off on a tangent because I could never prove/disprove
anything. I actually "assumed" that my Couch was a descendant of Irvin
Couch, which would make your connection a line I would not pursue. My change
in thinking NOW is that indeed Zenoria and Elizabeth were sisters and the
Hugh/Lewis/William/John connection was indeed my family. My first positive
proof was when I got a copy of the 1900 Census for Indian Territory. There
is found John Couch and Elizabeth along with the right children, including
my grandmother, Elsie. From there I went back to the next available census,
1880. In Faulkner Co, Arkansas is found side by side...My John and
Elizabeth; their brother Hugh....then Lewis...living side by side. They had
to be brothers, etc....And then from thence I went to the 1870 Census in Van
Buren Arkansas...and in one household # 51 in Craig Township are the
following:
Lewis Couch, his wife "Zenordia", their children (5) total; Charity
(Powell) age 70; L.A. Plummer son in law of Lewis, his wife Mary (Lewis
Dtr); then William Brinkley age 16 (I can't tie him into Zenoria or
Elizabeth yet, but sure he fits somewhere); and finally John Couch and his
wife Elizabeth! All in the same household. This is pretty good proof to
all of my present "assumptions".

1.) That Elizabeth is Zenoria's sister, thus dtr of Simeon...that John F. is
the son of William Lewis Couch...
I have downloaded from FTMaker a file which includes your line (you probably
sent it to them) and added Elizabeth and John F into the families... I have
attached a coupla of reports showing these connections...

I will continue to work on these and follow up later...

I must emphasize two things:
1.) the 1900 Census gives John's birthday as 1849 not 1870..so I was 20
years off in my original thinking. It gives Elizabeth Brinkley's birth as
1851.again I was off by 20 years.it shows the correct siblings along with my
grandmother.their birt dates coincide.and it shows that John's father was
born in Tennessee not North Carolina, but his mother (Charity Powell) shows
being born in Tennessee. And another fit is the daughter of John and
Elizabeth living with them along with her husband, who was named
Stephens.this fits our family remembering that Nancy Couch did indeed marry
a man named Stephens..
2.) That the 1880 Census in Faulkner/Union Co/Ark show all of these living
side by side and Charity living with the Lewis Couch, who Ray Hatton and I
agree must be William Lewis Couch b 1823, son of John Couch and Charity
Powell.

Here is the descendant report showing Zenoria's line down to the Hatton
family..

Jess good to hear from you!!! I donated the book. I lucky enough to get a
good copy of Jim Dodson and I had them reprinted. I am glad at least one
person has found the book.
I'm not smart enough to put anything on the net, so it would be good if you
did!!
What have you found in Union county??
Kay Couch-Lopez
In a message dated 9/9/03 9:17:44 AM, writes:

<< Three years ago, I made a trip to Arkansas to research the Couch family
of Magnolia/Calhoun/Union county. By accident, I went to the little town of
washington, Arkansas (the first capital of the confederacy). Neat town great
history....anyway...they have a schoolhouse there which houses the"Soutwest
Arkansas Regional Archives"..I of course popped in to look around...what a
gold mine...one of the books located there was one called "The History of
Old Calhoun" written in 1930. They have a whole section with the story of
the Couch Family written by Mrs. W.M. Jones. She details in about 6 pages
with several pictures (William Couch b 1798; Quincy and his wife: rev Thomas
G. Couch and his wife; and of course, S.O. Couch)the story of William and
Rebecca's story...great stuff...I took photocopies....it is a small book
only 37 pages...but it has biographical stories on several of the families
from that time period. They are: Dees, Dixon, Baker, Barnett, Booth,Couch,
Foster, Gunnels, Hutcheson,McKay,Newton, Owsley,Paschall, and Terrell.

It also has a good overview of the history of the area, with many
individuals mentioned..The Couch family has the longest section..

I also visted the cemetery in Magnolia and tho I didn't take pictures, I
wrote most of the Couch names and info down....my wife was very
impatient....William and rebecca are there, along with many of their
descendants...

I also vistited the "library" now house in the electric/city utility
building...I personally saw and handled many land, wills, slave records,
estate records, eta ll of William and his children...especially interesting
were the slave inventories...William owned many....Irvin himself was a large
plantation holder who owed 50 slaves...

I have not typed the cemetery info into the computer yet...longhand
only...hope to get it done...someday....but I do have a phocopy of this
book...I will get it scanned into my computer soon and I will share it with
any and all of you who are interested....

Sorry to ramble...
