Thanks Everette,
This is what all of us have, but I and a few others have questions
about our John of Perry being the John who married Elizabeth Campbell in
Orange Couny NC. We are just unable to prove this was our John.
Neither can we prove he wasn't !! I sent to Raleigh for a copy of the
marriage bond (see below), and when I shared with Sam Broadmore, he
seemed to be genuinely amazed that the name "James" did not appear
anywhere on it. Someone had told him the name was there with "2nd
marriage" for Elizabeth and 1st marriage for John.
For those who have yet to read the marriage bond, here 'tis...
We/I John Crouch acknowledge myself indebted to Alex Martin Esqr.
Governor & his (unclear word) in the sum of five hundred Pounds current
money, to be void upon that there is no lawful cause to obstruct a
marriage between John Couch & Elizabeth Campbell of Orange County State
of North Carolina. Witness my hand & seal this 2nd day of Dec. 1783.
Witness: (none) John Couch (his seal)
On a separate sheet (from archives), the following:
John Crouch
Marr. Bond
2 Dec 83
and in separate hand writing with what looks like heavy pencil:
Elizh. Campbell
Note both spellings of John's name as Crouch and Couch. I have found
this on yet one other document. The names seemed to have been used
interchangably. In both cases, a court clerk entered the record as
Crouch, yet signed as Couch.
