Subject: Re: Rosetta Couch (1871-?) of Pickens Co. SC

A little over a year ago, I wrote the query copied below. Today, I
know little more than I did then, and I am still seeking information
regarding Edward "Ed" Couch, the mysterious and missing husband of
Rosa (Rosetta, Rosie) Couch of Pickens County, SC.
Here is what I have added to the pile since last year:
Rosa may have been born in NC on 15 October of 1871 or 1874, and she
may have died on 2 March 1940. I say may have died on that date
because I have yet to locate her death certificate, but that is the
date chiseled into her tombstone. The tombstone also lists her year of
birth as 1874, but that is inconsistent with all known census data.
She is buried at Oolenoy Baptist Church in the Dacusville/Pumpkintown
area of Pickens.
I have been able to locate the obituaries of three children. One does
not give a maiden name for Rosa, and the others disagree, one says
Ables, the other says Sanderson, but all three agree that their father
was Edward "Ed" Couch.
On the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, Rosa is living in Pickens
County, SC, listed as a widow, born in NC and parents born in NC. Here
is a list of known children:
Hattie Couch, b. Nov 1891, m. Jackson Nabors
Fredrick "Fred" Couch, b. 15 Jan 1895/96
Sandacia Couch, b. 2 Feb 1892 or 1898, d. 7 Dec 1964, m. Aud Anders
McKinley Couch, b. 2 Jun 1900
Haywood Couch, b. abt 1903
Conestee Catherine Couch, b. 27 Feb 1905, d. 16 Jun 1990, m. Dill Anders
James Crawford "JC" Couch, b. 7 Nov 1907, d. 28 Aug 2002, m1. Edna
Stone, m2. Dorothy Lowery
Zulene Couch, b. 14 Dec 1909, d. 30 Nov 2000, m. Esley Fortner
The latter three children are the ones whose obits I have, but as you
undoubtedly will figure out, all three were born during the time
period that Rosa is listed as a widow. So who is this ghostly Ed Couch
who comes and goes? Did he ever exist? Was Rosa his mistress? What is
her maiden name? Could it be she was a Couch by birth?
Help me here, folks, 'cause I am stumped.
Sincerely,
Lee Anders

Rosetta "Rosa, Rose, Rosie" COUCH was born in 1871, supposedly, in
North Carolina, and, according to the obituary of two children, she
married a Ed COUCH, shown on the census under "father's birthplace" as
born in South Carolina.
According to the obituary of one child, Rosetta's maiden name was
ABLES, but I have yet to identify a Rosetta "Rosa, Rose, Rosie" ABLES
within a appropriate age bracket in the 1880 North Carolina or South
Carolina census.
She had the following known children: Hassie/Hessie (1891), Fredrick
(1895), Sandacia (1898), McKinley (1900), Haywood (ABT. 1902),
Conestee (1905), James (1907), and Zulene (1910). All born in the
Pickens and Dacusville areas of Pickens County, South Carolina. The
family has been identified on the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Pickens
County, SC censuses. Within all, Rosetta is listed as a widow.
I have identified only two possible "Ed"s in South Carolina within the
1880 census, one in Pickens (Eddie D, a son of William) and one in
Greenville (Edward, a son of Benjamin, I believe), but neither is a
likely candidate for father of our COUCH children. Both were living
long after 1900 and both married other women.
So, the question is, who was Ed Couch?
