Alice:

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to make contact with a descendant
of Phineas COX and Barbara STUMP. I'll write you personally off list.

I was hoping that I could find a connection between this Phineas
Cox and my Pendleton County, (West) Virginia, line of
Robert Cock (bef 1776-bef 1830) - Catherine WALDREN
Warden Cox (1823-1893) - Phebe Ann JEFFERS (1827-1897)
John Robert Cox (1851-1928) - Mary Catherine CRITES (1865-1912)

By 1880 Warden Cox and family are the only Cox family in Pendleton County,
and two of his adult sons are the only Cox individuals in neighboring
Grant County.

In Pendleton County land records I've found 1798-1804 references to Robert
Cox and wife Rachel, whom some records suggest might be a PRINE.

A web site at http://www.brumm.com/familytrees/8317.htm gives the parents
of Judith Cox (b 1797, Pendleton County, Virginia; d 1888 Iowa; m Jacob
DEAN) as Robert COCKS and Rachel PERRINE and cites A Portrait and
Biographical Album of DesMoines County, Iowa, Acme Publishing, 1888, as a
source of some information on Judith Cox Dean.

My conjecture is that the Robert Cock[s] who married Catherine Waldren had
an earlier marriage to Rachel Prine.

Also in the land records of Pendelton County are records 1789-1798 for
Thomas Cox/Cock/Cocke and wife Margaret/Marget/Peggy. I have not yet found
a connection between Thomas and Margaret Cox and Robert Cox.

(I've searched each available US census for Pendleton County for
Cox/Cock[e][s] entries.)

There is an earlier Cox family in Hampshire County, Virginia, in the 1750s
through 1790s, but I have not found a family connection to my Robert Cox
in Pendleton County.

I was especially curious about Phineas Cox because he married a Stump, and
I have a long line of Stump ancestors in what are now Grant and Hardy
counties, WV, near Pendleton County.

Your mention of a Gabriel Cox as a possible grandfather for Phineas fits
the pattern of what I'm hoping to find, but Halifax County, Virginia, as a
birthplace for Phineas doesn't match with the family described in the
Filson article, so maybe we are working with different families.

Incidentally, the DAR Patriot Index lists a Gabriel Cox who was born
before 1750 in Maryland, where a 1948 article in the Filson Club History
Quarterly ("The Coxes of Cox's Creek, Kentucky") says some of the
Hampshire County, Virginia, Cox family lived for a time (in particular,
heads of household named Isaac, Gabriel, and Friend).
