A good two cents worth seems to me and reminds me of my shortcut name,
Herman to Hermie and many obscene names

Bob

MY two cents......
It looks like almost everyone was called by a nick-name back then. Could it
be because it was shorter or most that could write would write the way it
sound and they would pick out a sound that was in the name.
My g-grandfather's family was named and call as follows, (Wife and 8
children)

Frances R. Cox (called Fannie)
Nancy Cordelia Cox (called Della or Del)
Mary C. Cox (or some reason she was called Aunt Mary)
William I. Cox (called Willie)
James F. Cox (called Jim)
Isabell Virginia Cox (called Bell)
Charles C Cox (called Charlie)
Mardra Sara Cox (called Dora or Dodie)
A. Rebecca Cox (called Bec or Beck)

Chas
