Dear Gwen or are you MisyBlue?
Now I know why mail lists can be so much fun and interesting...but also
sometimes discouraging...No! I don't know about a George Cooley in
Wray. In fact, I did not know of any other Cooleys in Washington or
Yuma counties.
My grandfather, Robert Berton Cooley, homesteaded near Flagler (Kit
Carson Co) about 1911. Later he bought a newspaper in Otis Colo (and
after that, a failed attempt for the Monte Vista newspaper). About 1929
he purchased two Akron newspapers, the News and the Reporter, combining
them into the Akron News Reporter. All of Robert's offspring (five
brothers) continued the newspaper tradition (my dad and his brother in
Akron and two other brothers in Limon (Lincoln Co) and the fifth in
Mountain Home Idaho). My generation broke with the newspaper tradition
except for my cousin Jim in Oxford, Nebraska (still publishing there).
Gwen , my suggestion, trace back a ways for George's ancestors from
Wray. If you can get back a couple of generations check the "Cooley
Family Genealogy". It's available in the Denver library and many other
major libraries. It is also on-line at ancestry.com but at a price,
$39.95 for their Family and Local Histories subscription. But you must
have one of their general memberships ($99.95). ancestry.com ain't
cheap these days.
