I had a DNA test done under the Overton DNA Project. My DNA results are
surprisingly close to some of the Craig DNA results, and I believe this is
due to the fact that those were close are probably folks from Wales,
Scotland, or Ireland as people from these areas have a Celtic heritage and
therefore some would have similar Haplogroup. My Overton line is Welsh, at
least that is the family tradition. I have not traced my line back to Wales
and probably never will until I find a DNA match on that side of the ocean.
It is believed that our family migrated from Wales in the late 1600s, but
have only been able to trace back to 1753 when A Moses Overton of King &
Queen County, VA bought land in Amelia County, VA. Wales in the late 1600s
and early 1700s did not use Surnames as the use of Surnames was an English
(Saxon) thing. It was not really until the 1800s that the Welsh people began
using Surnames, which was forced on them by the Crown. So when my family
crossed the Atlantic more than likely they picked up a Surname when they
tried to board an English ship. I would be surprised if my relatives in
Wales used the Surname Overton. However, I would not be surprised to find
that they came from an area of Wales called Overton, which I believe is in
North Wales in Flintshire.
