Hi.
My husband, Jerry Young, is descended from Hocking Co., Ohio, CRAWFORDS. I
would like to share what I have on these Crawfords. None of this is my
original research -- some of it is from his aunt, and she got some
information from Arden Lowell Crawford.

William CRAWFORD, b. 1770-1780, in Virginia. He was in the War of 1812.
He died about 1837, probably in Hocking Co., Ohio.
"William came to Ohio with his family in 1823. He evidently lost his second
wife in Virginia. William appears on the property roll in 1827 (in Hocking
County?). His 80 acres was bought in 1830 from the Ohio Company Purchase.
He was its first land owner. It is presumed that William died previous to
the selling of his 80 acres in 1838."
Nothing here gives the names of William Crawford's wives.
Children:
1. Nancy Crawford. "Married a Baptist minister, Herid BRAY. Her mother died
when she was 7 years old. She reared 3 younger brothers. She and the
Reverend Bray helped to found Buffalo, Missouri ... In 1849, Rev. Bray
joined the Gold Rush in Calif. In 1853 she followed him."
2. Isabell. m. Daniel WYMAN. "Isabell and Daniel WYMAN and their family are
found in the Vinton County Ohio census in later years."
3. Jane. m. Joseph SHULER. "Supposedly came to Vermilion Co., Ill. Later
moving to Oklahoma."
4. Josiah Adam, b. 1810, Sinking Creek, Virginia (this information does not
give the county), d. 1901, Vermilion Co., IL (near Danville!). - m. 1,
1833: Hannah WATKINS; m. 2, 1860: Minerva Ellen FIREBAUGH. "Josiah bought
70 acres in 1832 in Hocking Co., Ohio. He and Hannah sold it in 1838 prior
to moving to Illinois."
5. Samuel J. "His name appears in the selling of William's 80 acres in Star
Township, Hocking Co., Ohio. It was called five equal undivided shares of
heirship. He and Thomas were sellers."
6. Thomas. "First bought William's land from his siblings for 27 dollars.
The following hear he and Samuel sold William's land as indicated above."

It seems that Thomas H. CRAWFORD, b. abt 1815, could be the youngest son of
the above family. Actually, I do not know if Thomas was the 6th child in
William CRAWFORD's family -- that's just how he's listed. Does the 1850
census show that he was born in Ohio?

The information I have only gives the names of the children of Josiah Adam
CRAWFORD. His oldest was Sarah Jane CRAWFORD, b. 1834. There's not an
Elizabeth CRAWFORD, b. 1829, in any of the information that I have, but I
think she's got to be related. Josiah Adam CRAWFORD's 11th child, Elizora
Alice CRAWFORD, b. 1862, m. 1 (1881), Douglas McClellan LANE; and m. 2 (no
date given), Albert Riley GOODWIN, son of William Riley GOODWIN! She is
buried in Danville, Illinois.

I hope there's some information that we can share.

Thanks,
Helen Young
