Hello, everyone, and experienced netters, have patience a moment.

Perhaps I'm overreacting, but.....there was a bit of unsolicited e-mail,
semi-commercial in content, sent to the Allison list. This is
occasionally called "spam" and is annoying at least, and offensive at
most. This sort of thing is not acceptable on lists; some of you may
remember the Maiser incident. I had thought that we were safe, both of
these lists being quite small by most standards, not in the thousands
like the Jones list must be!

I understand that the worst thing you can do is reply to such messages
since this assures the sender that your address is indeed active and you
can be equally assured of receiving more of the same if you do indeed
reply, even to their "To be removed, please reply" line. So use your
delete key at will. Or reply if you wish, but be aware of possible
consequences.

Up until now, these two lists had been open to outside posting, i.e.,
people not on the list were able to post to the list. This was for two
reasons; first, I wanted to be able to post to the list from my work
address in the event I found something really monumental while at work
(yes, I actually work at my job, but I also go to the library on my
lunch hour!) and second, to allow people who did not or could not join
the list to post in the hope that someone, somewhere would have that
special clue for someone on the list.

And I know that this message is longer than the spam, but I wanted
everyone to be aware of this change in the event that someone else was
in the habit of posting from another e-mail address. Disagreements or
rebuttals may be sent to me privately <>

Have a great weekend, and happy hunting!

Paula
