I study CRAWFORDS of the Rockingham and Augusta County areas in
Virginia. The following CRAWFORD surnames were extracted from microfilmed
records of
the local Rockingham County, Virginia newspapers in 1999-2000: The
Rockingham
Register, The Harrisonburg Daily News, and The Daily-News Record,
Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The Rockingham Register began publication in 1822. Very few of the
earliest issues from 1822-1865 have survived (For example, only the October
5, 1822 issue is available from the entire year 1822). The few issues that
are available are non-circulating at the Library of Virginia at Richmond,
Virginia. There is a more complete collection for the years 1866-1904, with
a few scattered missing issues.
The Harrisonburg Daily News began publication in about 1904. It was
published under the name The Harrisonburg Daily News up until June 3, 1913.
On June 4, 1913 the name was changed to The Daily News-Record, which is still
in publication today.
This transcription probably does not include every reference to all of the
CRAWFORDS in the newspapers. Some of the microfilm is of poor quality and
not easy to read, and I'm sure my eyes grew tired at times and I probably
missed a few. Every effort was made to transcribe the records accurately.
However, if you
think an error has been made, please contact me so that I may double check my
notes, or you may want to check the original source for yourself. Email me
if you discover anyone you know, as I am curious as to who some of these
people are.

several parties, we think the "punishment did not fit the crime." WALTER
