I thought it was a place name after Crow's Pass (or Crow's ford) in
Scotland. ??

This is a story as told to me by Jack Manahan. Mr Manahan was a history
professor @ the University of Virginia. He was married to Anastasia, the
supposed daughter of the Czar of Russia. Mr Manahan had a photographic
memory and was very interested in genealogy.
He said that in England & Scotland they gave people their names by their
deeds or occupations. example Carpenter, Collier, Taylor etc.. He said there
was a battle between the English & the Scots. This one fellow supposedly
forded a stream & circled behind the English and helped the Scots to win the
battle. The stream he forded was named Craw hence the name Crawford.
Has anyone ever heard this story before.
I'm new to this so forgive if I repeat old subjects.
