Carl,

Glad you are feeling better - or at least well enough to bang your head
against the proverbial brick wall again.

Re your Martin - the 1850 and 1860 census both indicate that Martin was born
in Virginia, which is probably more likely since Virginia became a state in
1788 and Ohio didn't become a territory until 1799, and a state in 1803.
Perhaps his "Ohio" answer was given because where he was born may have
fallen into Ohio at some later time.

A Martin Crawford who is of the right approximate age (give or take a few)
is indexed in 1820 Rockingham County. Because Rockingham is adjacent to
Hardy, WVA, I would suspect it is the same Martin:

1820 Rockingham County, Virginia
Crawford, Martin - 1 male over 45; 1 female 10-16, 1 female over 45

You might try Crawford estate records in Shenandoah and Rockingham to see if
any reference to your Martin turns up.

Re the marriage records, I have had no experience in obtaining marriage
records in Virginia, but my Handy Book states that Shenandoah County clerk
of court has marriage, divorce, probate, civil court and land records from
1772. Certainly worth a try. Some old marriage bonds give name of parents,
and most all show the name of the bondsman, who was usually a relative.

I wish you luck - and that your headache is gone soon.
