There are 2 SURBERs in the DAR Patriot Index, 1990 ed. The page is part
3, p. 2857.
1. Slurber, Jacob; b 1744 PA d 8-23-1839 OH; m (1) Mrs. Catherine (Haller)
Coffeld; (2) Mrs. Barbara (Mayer) Fensler; Pvt Spy VA PNSR
2. Surber, Joseph; b 1749 VA d Oct 1825 VA; m (1) ---- Scott; 2=(2) Mary
Ann Stevens; Pvt VA
The DAR is now more stringent about proofs than in the past, but at
least you know someone was able to prove these individuals in the past. You
may be able to obtain pension files on the two individuals. And if this is
your Joseph, you probably will want to order the earlier DAR papers
submitted by the member or members who joined on him. See www.DAR.org for
how to order these.
You will need both proof of service in the Rev. War and the ability to
link yourself generation by generation to the patriot in your direct line.
Proofs can include but are not limited to vital records, baptismal records,
old diaries and letters, cemetery records, tombstone inscriptions, census
documents, land records, wills or letters of administration... You need by
some means to prove both marriages and the parent child links. There are
times when some direct evidence is missing, but several pieces of
circumstantial evidence like linking a sibling to the parent and the
siblings to each other will suffice as proof.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
