The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, March 30, 1905
MRS. LEE CRAWFORD died suddenly at her home on west Braden Avenue on Sunday,
March 19, 1905, at 11:30 o'clock. She had been ill for three weeks with
lagrippe but she was not considered in a dangerous condition and death was probably
due to heart failure. Her son and wife who had been with her had gone home to
be absent a few hours and MR. CRAWFORD came up town to get some medicine. When
he returned home he found his wife dead. She was sitting on the floor with
her head resting on the side of the bed. Her body was warm and life had been
extinct but a few minutes. Largely attended funeral services were held at the
family residence on Tuesday forenoon at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr.
Franklin, after which interment took place in the Chariton Cemetery.
MARGARET LANE, daughter of MALACHI and ELIZABETH LANE, was born in Madison
County, Ohio, on February 19, 1837. She came to Iowa in 1855 and was married
here on July 19, 1874, to LEONIDAS CRAWFORD who survives her. An adopted son,
HARRY CRAWFORD, is also living. MRS. LORA NITCHMAN of Millington, Ill., was also
reared by MR. and MRS. CRAWFORD, although she was not adopted. MR. CRAWFORD is
a member of the local board of the Children's Home Finding Association of Des
Moines and in the good work has been greatly assisted by his wife.
MRS. CRAWFORD is also survived by two brothers, JAS. LANE of Cleveland and
SAMUEL of Wayne County, who at present is quite sick. Deceased was always
pleasant and agreeable to everyone and her kindness of heart and generous nature won
for her friends of all with whom she came in contact. The final summons came
to her unexpected but it found her ready to go. The bereaved relatives have
the sincere sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
Among those from out of town who attended the last sad rites were MRS. ANNA
PERRY and son of Oakland; MRS. JOS. CRAWFORD of Omaha; MRS. SARAH MCBETH and
MRS. ZIBA CRAWFORD of Fairfield, and a number of other relatives from Lucas and
Cleveland.
