000290 Verplancken - Father Luis Verplancken, S.J., Who Frequently Said 'For
The Harvest
Of The Lord Is So Abundant And So Needed Of Care', Ended His Years Of Caring
For Others
On This Earth On Sunday, September 26, 2004, At The Clinica Santa Teresita
(The
Tarahumara Children's Hospital), In Creel, Mexico. His Funeral Mass And
Burial Was In
Sisoguichi, On Tuesday, September 28, 2004. Fr. Luis Was Well Known By Many
People In
South Louisiana, Especially In The New Orleans And Lafayette Areas Because
Of His Annual
Visits To Attend The Tarahumara Children's Hospital Fund Benefit. Because Of
His Desire
To Help The Tarahumara Indians To Farm At Altitudes Of Over 7500 Feet In The
Sierra Madre
Mountains, He Obtained A Year's Scholarship To Attend The University Of
Southwestern
Louisiana In Lafayette Early In His Priesthood. He Made Many Friends There
Who Helped Him
Realize Some Of His Dreams From That Point Until The Present. It Began A
Network Of A
Group That Made Many Trips To The Mission And From It Also Came The
Tarahumara Children's
Hospital Fund That Was Started In New Orleans By Sidney (S.L.) And Belle
Lamarie' Almost
23 Years Ago. The Tchf Has Been The Central Receiving Office For Donations
From The
United States To The Mission. Fr. Verplancken, 78, Was Born And Educated In
Guadalajara,
Mexico. He Joined The Society Of Jesus In 1943 And Was Ordained On The Last
Sunday Of
October, 1957, The Feast Of Christ The King. When Fr. Luis Started
Ministering To The
Tarahumara, He Found A Community With An Infant Mortality Rate Of More Than
75 Percent
And Suffering From Malnutrition, Tuberculosis, And Gastrointestinal And
Respiratory
Diseases. In 1965 He Started A Small Clinic - Eighteen Beds For Children,
Five For Adults
- To Serve The Tarahumara. Even At This Clinic, Which Lacked Running Water
And
Electricity, Demand Far Exceeded Capacity, So Fr. Verplancken Set Out To
Secure The Money
To Build A Larger Hospital With Water And Power. In 1979 He Opened Clinica
Santa Teresita
In Creel, A 75-Bed Clinic With Running Water Piped In From Six Miles Away
Through A
System He Constructed. The Hospital, Complete With A Pharmacy, Lab, And
Operating Room,
Offers Adult, Pediatric, Dental, Maternity, Nutrition And X-Ray Services.
Since 1981 The
Daughters Of Charity Of St. Vincent De Paul Have Been Nurses, Adminstrators,
And Service
Coordinators For The Clinic's Patients, Who No Number More Than 5,000 A
Year. The
Pediatric Mortality Rate Has Dramatically Declined. Fr. Verplancken Also
Built Two
Boarding Schools Where The Children Stay For Five Days Each Week Returning
To Their Homes
On Weekends. About 150 Children Attend The Schools Each Year. He Warehoused
And
Distributed Food As Needed To The Indians As Well As Blankets, Clothes And
Shoes. He
Learned How To Locate And Drill Shallow Water Wells To Provide Clean
Drinking Water And
His Latest Endeavor Was 'Harvesting' Rain Water From The Roofs Of Buildings
When It Was
Not Financially Feasible To Drill. He Also Made An Impact On People's Lives
With His
Photography. His Pictures Are Renowned Not Only In Chihuahua, But Also
Throughout Mexico.
Countless Articles, Books, And Travel Guides On The Copper Canyon, The
Sierra, Or The
Tarahumara Feature His Photographs. Some Have Been Sold To Support The
Mission In The
Form Of Photos, Postcards, And Framed Prints. A Memorial Mass Will Be
Celebrated To Honor
His Life And Work On Saturday, October 23, At 10:30 A.M., At St. Dominic
Church, 775
Harrison Avenue. An Informal Reception Will Follow In The Rectory Meeting
Room. Memorial
Donations Preferred To Tarahumara Children's Hospital Fund, 4904 Clearview
Parkway,
Metairie, La 70006. 455 Times Picayune 10-21-2004
