Air Force captain honored for rescue
The Associated Press
LAUDERDALE COUNTY — Mississippi lawmakers on Friday honored a Lauderdale County native who helped rescue fellow members of the
American military after a helicopter crash two years ago in Iraq.
Air Force Capt. Bryan Creel was part of a 13-member group that saved five soldiers from the wreckage of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter
in an Iraqi desert on April 16, 2004.
Creel was mission commander for one of the two HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue crews who faced enemy fire as they did their jobs that night.
Creel, now 38, grew up in the Clarkdale community south of Meridian. He's now stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas.
Senators gave him a standing ovation Friday. Creel thanked them for the recognition but said he and his fellow crew members were
simply doing their jobs.
