Helen (Tillman) McConnell Hasty - a retired educator and administrator in
the Mobile County Public School System, died September 19, 2008 at her home
at the age of 86. She was a graduate of Theodore High School, received her
Bachelor's Degree from Livingston State Teacher's College (now the
University of West Alabama) and her Master's Degree from the University of
Alabama.

When she graduated from Theodore, women had few career options. They could
become teachers, nurses, or work in an office environment as stenographers,
clerks or secretaries. She chose the role of teacher, as had many of her
peers, and began her teaching at Alba School in Bayou La Batre at the ripe
old age of 17. Through the years, she taught at Theodore, both Elementary
and High School, and Old Shell Elementary. She was Librarian at K. J. Clark
Junior High School and was the first principal of Orchard Elementary School.
During those years, she furthered her education during the summer to earn
her Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education. After two years as Principal
at Orchard, she was named Personnel Assistant for the Mobile County School
Board. Her last post before resigning from School Board employment was
Coordinator of the Federal Title 1 Instructional Program. After leaving that
position, she was employed as a consultant with The Encyclopedia Britannica
Educational Corporation. She was Chairman of the Junior High School Library
Committee, President of the local Classroom Teachers, President of State
Classroom Association and President of the Mobile Education Association. She
was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the local honorary teachers' society and
received the Distinguished Education Award from that group; The Mobile
Retired Teacher Association and the Alabama Retired Teacher Association.

A lifelong Baptist, she was a member of Springhill Baptist Church. Born in
Theodore, AL, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Lena Belle Tillman
McConnell. She married her high school classmate Major Max Hasty after he
returned from Army duty in World War II, in 1946. Max died in 1993 after
nearly 47 years of marriage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Jesse
H. McConnell and Harry McConnell; and three sisters, Ethel Creel, Myrtle
Montgomery, and Gladys McConnell.

She is survived by one sister, Eloise Moore, and one brother, Ben (LaNell)
McConnell. Funeral services will be held from the graveside at Mobile
Memorial Gardens on Monday, September 22, 2008 at 12 noon. Visitation will
be held at the funeral home beginning at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements by
