I have been following this converstation and just thought I would add my two
cents.
I know that the lunch program has been in the schools in the US for many
years.
We don't have that up here in Ontario. When I went to school kids went home
for lunch and if their parents weren't home they went to a friends house.
Now most kids stay for lunch and lunches are brought from home. Elementary
schools don't have cafeterias so the kids either eat lunch in their class
rooms at their desks or in the gym.
This year I am on lunch duty at our school. We try to make sure that every
child eats their lunch and we try to keep an eye on what they are eating.
They have been taught to eat their sandwiches or whatever first and then
their treats (cookies/snackbars/sweets). If a child doesn't have a lunch the
parents are called. If they can't be reached then something is found for the
child in the staff room or alot of times children will offer to share with
those who don't have. The point is that no child ever goes hungry.
About once a month they have Pizza Day to raise money for the school to buy
"extras". Last year we raised enough money to buy 2 new playgrounds!
Today was Pizza Day and I was in the kindergarten class, several children
didn't have lunches and insisted they ordered even though no forms could be
found for them. They still received their pizza and nobody said "well they
didn't pay or order".
I think that sometimes the "higher-ups" forget about the children and only
see the bottom line.
Sorry this was so long, I didn't mean to be so long-winded!
