Do you actually have documents where your maiden name is written with a v
(diacritic) on top?

The surname HAVJERNIK is found among Slovaks

HAVRANEK is found in Croatia

in his language. He said the last name (HAVERNIC) did.

And what did he say the name meant?

I can trace my ancestors Haevernick back to about 1620. They lived in Hohen
Sprenz, Mecklenburg and were church custodians, teachers and organists for
several generations.

Balkans? I don't know about the Balkans but I can tell you that Croatians
did migrate to Burgenland in Austria during the Ottoman invasions. Also
Croatians fought in the south part of Germany in the 30 Years War.

I read up on the histories of Croatia and Serbia - they seem to have had a
most unrestful time over the centuries.

Search Google.com for HAEVERNICK genealogy and you will find 5 links but
only 2 appear to be relevant.
