Subject: [CROCKER-L] Who to include in Big G
Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 15:45:53 -0500
This is an attempt to clarify/illustrate
which individuals should be selected to include
in the Crocker master GEDCOM. I have divided
the relatives into 4 groups (LEVEL 1 - 4).
If it is difficult to follow, I apologize; but
this is the best that I can do in a plain text
format. I could redo & post an a HTML or RTF
version on a web page if this is a problem.
I will use my line as an example to illustrate.
--------------------------------------
LEVEL 1
-------
--- John Crocker
--- Joe Crocker
--- Ruth Weathers
--- Jim Crocker
--- Nancy Wright
David Crocker
--- Edna Ladd
Children of Jim & Edna Ladd Crocker
Roy, Maggie, Ernest, David
Children of Joe & Nancy Wright Crocker
Fannie, Nora, West, Tom, Joe, Jim
Children of John & Ruth Crocker
Clarinda, Nancy, Joseph, John
---------------------------------------------
LEVEL 2
-------
Spouses & Children of siblings of direct line
CROCKER ancestors. For example, children of
siblings of my grandfather Jim (i.e., the
grandchildren of Joe & Nancy):
Spouse of Fannie: (1)Lonnie SUMNER
Children: Louise SUMNER
Spouse of Fannie: (2) ? WYLIE
Children: Paul WYLIE, Pauline WYLIE
Spouse of Nora: R. L. Burns
Children: Robert BURNS, Fanny BURNS
Spouse of West: Sally Pettie
Children: Elzie, Clarence, etc.
Spouse of Tom: Georgia LADD
Children: Thomas, Albert, etc.
Spouse of Joe: Minnie SMITH
Children: Johnnie, Ezell, etc.
--------------------------------------
LEVEL 3
-------
Parents of spouses of direct line CROCKER ancestors:
Parents of Edna LADD
George Douglas & Louise PHILLIPS LADD
Parents of Nancy WRIGHT
?
Parents of Ruth Weathers
?
--------------------------------------
LEVEL 4
--------
Children of the spouses parents listed in
LEVEL 3 (=siblings of spouses). Example:
Children of George D. & Louise LADD:
Kate, Liza May, George, Charles
(Edna, already listed)
Children of ... WRIGHT
?
Children of ... WEATHERS
?
--------------------------------------
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
-----------
SPOUSES & CHILDREN of direct CROCKER ancestors
as outlined in LEVEL 1 is the MINIMUM RECOMMENDED.
Many genealogy programs have features that make it easy to
select these individuals for export to GEDCOM.
I do not recommend including LEVEL 4 in
submissions for the CROCKER master GEDCOM,
but up through LEVEL 3 is fine. I do
recommend including LEVEL 2 where possible.
While it is true that Crocker daughters'
children will not be Crockers, that is OK.
Besides, it would be difficult to select
just the children of Crocker sons.
And this should be obvious, but try to
include at least birth & death dates for
these folks when known (except for living
individuals, if any are included).
If you want to include Crocker lines other
than your direct line, that's fine, just
follow the same format as above, and
include the source citations. As a general
rule, I would say if you have done the research
yourself, then submit it. If someone else
did it, but they're not using a computer, then
you can submit it for them.
I hope this will help you decide which
individuals to select. I am not, however, the
GEDCOM POLICE, and I do not intend on scouring
files to see if someone included an extra
generation or two of other surnames. I leave it
up to you to make the decision on whom to include.
If you submit a file with >500 individuals, though,
I would probably be suspicious that it includes a
lot of lateral branches (LEVEL 4+ individuals).
