Hello Dorothy

Thanks for your information about Lilly Crocker 8-29-1807/3-23-1879), his
family, and their moves
Yes, it is helpful. What I am about to attempt to do is work up a Master
List of all the Crockers I can locate who are connected to the ones who
came from Devon (or nearby parts of England), and then trace their
descendants through to the present. So many Crockers from the early
Virginia settlement seem to be running into "brick walls" because few if
anyone except Myrtis (see Maurice's postings about Drury Crocker and
others) has done anything widespread.

The true and ONLY (I believe) way we can really establish connections and
find our missing links is to freely communicate and share all the
information each of us has gathered. Michael Crocker is setting up a
ged.com which may serve to accomplish this. I don't really understand it...
and I don't have a Family History Program I can use to interpret what
Michael is putting in. Dean Crocker is the owner of this LIST and without
his help and ability to keep the LIST active, we could not communicate with
one another on the net -- which is the greatest invention of the 20th
century (in my opinion)! BAR NONE. It beats automobiles, aircraft, radio
and television -- because we can be brain to brain in seconds, without
moving an inch and at a minimum of expense. Long Live the Internet!

For the last four or five months I've been printing all the posts from all
the group of Crockers who sprang, apparently, from those who came to
Virginia USA (willingly or unwillingly) in the 1600s. Now I have a file
folder FULL of miscellaneous messages, and a giant picture puzzle to
assemble. I have so many, already, that I can no longer remember who is
searching for whom, or whether a familiar name needs to be referred to one
or more of those who have posted.

So I really MUST begin to get these people in order. Then I hope to get
back to the originator of each query and ask each one to send me ALL the
information they have -- from their earliest known Crocker ancestor right
down to the youngest grandchild in the present families. With that
information I hope to build a "Tree" that (smile here) will rival the
Mighty Oak!

I know it can be done because I did something similar for William Crocker
of Barnstable MA -- although that work (which took several years to
complete and finally find a publisher) -- is not yet finished. (Genealogy
is never finished!) The one I will try to do for the Virginia Crockers will
always be incomplete, too. Not everyone will contribute... not all the
Crockers CARE! Lots of them won't even know the LIST exists. Others won't
yet have computers or be on the net. But... I'm still working on Vol. III
for the descendants of William of Barnstable, and may be able to graft
"lost branches" onto his tree, at the same time I am working on the
Virginian Crockers.

It will be a start that all of us who are connected to early Crockers who
emigrated from England to the colonies that became the United States of
America can refer to when seeking our heritage.

I would like to put this information in manuscript form so that it can be
published and made available to all of you who are interested in adding to
your personal libraries a book that provides as much information as I can
gather about these courageous people who braved the wilderness and helped
in no small way to create this nation. I ask only that each person
contribute data for which he or she can provide reliable proof -- family
bible, censuses, wills, deeds, birth/death/marriage certificates, local
vital records (book and page #) -- or previously published works (author's
name, name of document, date of publication). Information about sources
should be given when data is contributed.

In some instances no proof or source can be found -- only family history
and legend -- in these cases it will be necessary to quote the source as
"Personal Family History." or (PFH) in the text.

Without those sources, none of the information can be depended upon as
"fact." Please keep in mind, (as I must at all times!) that we all make
MISTAKES. If a source you quote contains an error, that error will be
repeated again and again. And if I make errors (as I certainly SHALL no
matter how hard I try to produce a perfect document), my errors will be
repeated, too. I'll do my best to avoid errors.

Finally, it is important that everyone who subscribes to the Crocker List
and who posts information to the list or to me, personally, in connection
with this work must realize that it is my intention to publish the
information. I cannot assure privacy.

Therefore, if you have anything to contribute that YOU DO NOT wish to be
made public, PLEASE SAY SO! Then I will respect your request and leave out
the information you submit with restrictions (unless I find it from another
source!) Please keep in mind that If too many people "restrict" their
contributions, the "tree" will have so many lopped off limbs, branches, and
twigs, the whole purpose will be negated. If that happens, I will drop the
project, and someone else will need to take up the chase. I'm not looking
for any lawsuits!

Dorothy, this is the first "public commitment" I am making to this
project... and I am putting my positions on the table to begin with...in
this message to you which is also going to the LIST. I hope everyone will
read and understand them, and cooperate. If there are questions, please
post to the list so we can all know what the concerns may be, and if there
are problems, we can all contribute to decisions about what our best
solutions may be

Thank you!Andrea
