The word "reputed" is exactly correct. The best research to date has
not been able to determine where the line of Anthony originates. It is
only presumed to be Devon, England since there is where most Crockers
were found prior to the Crockers in the colonies. There are records
that some of the Crockers came by way of Barbados, but just how Anthony
got here, when he got here, where he came from, or whether he could be
of a second generation has never been determined.
We must remember also that the records available in the southern states
are fewer and have more descrepencies than the ones available in the
upper tier of states. The south was primarily an rural and many were
uneducated, thus records are at best somewhat of a problem to find and
understand when found. This is seen as so many wills, deeds, etc. are
signed with a "Mark" rather than a signature. This being true, we have
to be even more careful of what we state as fact.
Keep on digging,
Dean
