Subject: [CROCKER-L] Misc CROCKER stuff

Hello,

Been doing some more digging into Isle of Wight history for the different
family lines that I have in that county. Sometimes I wished my Crockers had
moved out with the rest of them (LOL) because they seem to be connected to
every surname in the county on way or another. While looking at the other
surnames I find more bits and pieces of CROCKER stuff that confuses me just a
tad bit more than what I already am.

In searching for my ATKINSON, GRAY, BARLOW, MOODY, BROCH, BEALE and CROCKER
lines I found some info that maybe ya'll already have but I didn't. Now I am
faced with doing word problems to try and reason out where it all fits----who
said you never needed algebra after you got out of school!

In reading a diary written by Archibald Atkinson, MD of Isle of Wight while
serving in the Civil War under Gen Early - he mentions his brother-in-law
"Rev. William Crocker". I can't tell if Archibald was writting that his
sister & brother-in law were in Isle of Wight or elsewhere in the south from
his diary but he does spend a number of lines talking about the wonderful
nature of William Crocker, etc..

Other family names that Archibald mentioned as cousins/aunts/uncles were LEE
& Chilton and I have found Archibald's mother was Elizabeth Ann Chilton. Also
there is a possiblity that Archibald's sister had a different mother than he
did. Archibald Atkinson (sr) was married at least twice his first wife was
Frances W. DAY who died in 1825 leaving two children- one only 3 months old.
Does any one have a REV William Crocker about the time of the Civial War?

Depending on who this William Crocker is means that there might be a double
connection in my CROCKER/ATKINSON line.

Parts of Archibalds dairy can be read online and I can dig up the address for
anyone who might be connected through his sister.

Also in reading pieces of Obits listed on the Library of VA site, I found
where a Capt. William Crocker age 49 died at his brother's Col. Simpson (sp as
it appearred) Crocker's home in Norfolk Co, Va - Craney Island 10/17/1827- It
also said he left two sons-
Also
Major William Crocker died at his residence in Smithfield (IOW) 1/10/1815 - a
soldier of the Revolution-

***** both obits are available at the Library of Va film # 188- from the
Bernard J. Henley collection and can be ordered on line at the Library's web
site.

I have been told that my Joel Crocker in IOW is connected to Drury Crocker of
AL through Drury's son William. Vince Jones (a Crocker couisn in IOW)
believes that when Druy went to Al, two of his sons - Henry & William stayed
in VA.

Mr Jones also believes that before the group went to AL they went to NC. and
some stayed in NC- just who stayed I am not sure- but what I have noticed is a
similarity in names in all three lines.

I am planning to met with Mr. Jones during the week of Thanksgiving in IWO
to see the evidence he has for the CROCKER and other connecting lines - look
at cemetry plots, etc and maybe get a clarification on his reasoning since I
am not sure it all fits. If there are questions any one wants to ask him
about his research and conclusions I'll be happy to take them with me and see
what comes up since he has access to the courthouse on a regular basis. He
doesn't have a computer and I know how expensive long distant phone calls can
be-

I listed below the names of CROCKERS I found in looking at census indexs for
VA for 1820>1810>1790 since it appears that it was in this time frame many of
the Crockers we are tracing came of age and where still in VA

1820 1810 1790
William IOW William IOW Samuel
William jr, " Drury IOW
Anthony
Drew, " Milner IOW John
Henry, " Johnson IOW Sarah
Jesse, " MIlner - for the poor house
John, " John Southhampton
Johnson " Jesse Southhampton
Sampson (sp as it appeared) in Nfk co (Norfolk Co.)

Maybe by looking at it backwards- I can see the forward motion-
