This is pure speculation on my part, but after the American Revolution many families did not want to acknowledge their English ties, so the Crowleys may have taken to calling themselves Irish as a protection.

I do acknowledge a 30 year gap in Jeffry's early life that I wish I could
explain, as it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. There was much prejudice
in being an illegitimate child in England which probably made Jeffry's life very
difficult as a child My guess is he probably went to Ireland as a young man and
then left Ireland for Virginia in about 1729. It has been passed down through
several generations that Jeffry was Irish and came from Ireland. We all know
that "Crowley" is an Irish name and not English. I believe that Jeffry married
Effie Nearne in Virginia in the middle to late 1730s. He possibly knew her in
Ireland and after he was settled in this country he sent for her. This is
partly based on when his children were born. Ariel did mention that he was
unable to find Jeffry in Ireland in the 1700s even though numerous attempts were
made to do it.
I should have mentioned that I consider Rowley Regis a suburb of Birmingham, and
therefore the focal point of Ariel's search for Jeffry.
The common names in every generation of the Crowleys have been John, James,
Thomas, Benjamin and Samuel and sometimes makes it difficult to determine which
person is being referred to. Jeffry was certainly a different name which makes
it easier to know who you are talking about.
