Does anyone know if it is a convention to indicate approximate ages by putting three wavey lines under them, e.g. d. May 11, 1817 age 70, where there are three wavey lines under the 70.

I'm thinking of the wavey equals sign, used to indicate approximation in mathematics; don't know the origin of that convention.
