Dear Jackie,

Indexes are found in the back of a book and used to find a page number for a
certain name or subject in that particular book. Census indexes are often
transcriptions (so errors do results) and are produced in all media. They do
not always come with a roll of microfilm or CD, but are purchased separately
or come with an online service.

Here is what <A HREF="http://www.heritagequest.com/html/indexes.html">HeritageQuest - Indexes</A> has to say about them.

An Index will help you identify and locate your ancestors in original
records. Once you've found your ancestor, you can confirm information and
gather additional facts. To learn more about Indexes, visit our <A HREF="http://www.heritagequest.com/html/indexes_qa.html">Indexes FAQ</A>.
