This question was answered on another list just today so if no one minds
I have just copied the response becasue I beleive that it was answered
very well. I have posted the entire answer and give credit to Denny.
Last state refers to the last resident state where the person worked.

SSDI dates should not be used as a primary source. The information
supplied to Social Security when a person dies or applies for social
security is supplied by the person or their family. Sometimes it is
sent by the funeral home as a courtesy. Mistakes can and are made. Many
documents are only primary sources for specific information. The SSDI
record is a primary source for the Social Security Number and
the date it was applied for and nothing else. When the person applies for
his/her Social Security number, they supply the date of birth and that
may not always be known by the person applying. Even the
birth date on a death certificate is not a primary source for the same
reason, it is supplied by the surviving family and in cases where there
are none, by other sources all of which can be wrong.
The SSDI does use a system to indicate a death date is authenticated. On
Rootsweb's SSDI index look for the following:
(V)=(Verified) Report verified with a family member or someone acting on
behalf of a family member.
(P)=(Proof) Death Certificate Observed.
If the "P" is found then the date has been proven by the death
certificate. "V" means, as indicated above, the date came from a family
member or person acting on their behalf and can still be questionable.
A lack of either code makes the date suspect and it should only be used
as a suggested date of death or along with a preponderance of other
sources agreeing with that date to increase its surety.
Hope this helps.
