Subject: [CTMID] Probate for David Jewett?
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 09:14:23 EST

With all the activity I see currently, lots of folks must be tuning in! It's
great. The helpfulness we see in checking published sources is admirable.
Researchers should remember, however, that sometimes direct research in the
primary records is the only way to crack some of those "stone walls."

With that in mind, maybe someone knows where the probate records for David
Jewett may be found. He died around 1780-1785, leaving a widow Sarah and a
number of children as heirs at East Haddam. His death may have been
something of a scandal, since I've found no record of his death or burial,
and the probate records appear to be missing from the East Haddam/Colchester
Probate Court. Rather peculiar for a not-so-minor landowner in the Foxtown
area. Even the East Haddam Municipal Historian, Dr. Karl Stofko, cannot find
them. NUMEROUS deeds subsequent to his death refer the searcher for boundary
descriptions to the probate records, which seem to be curiously missing.
Without the probate/will metes-and-bounds data, it's impossible to plot out
the family's land holdings. Is there a local land title guarantee company
that might be able to supply the missing information? (I've tried contacting
at least one by mail, but got no response.) Any suggestions? Thanks. - Jim
Rogers
