Hello Everyone,

Time to post the list rules which are basically the rules all of
rootswebs lists use but some just plain ignore. The first part is part
of Rootswebs AUP or Acceptable Use Policy. I have put some comments in (
). But #1 is the important one!

John

ROOTSWEB'S COMMON-SENSE ACCEPTABLE
USE POLICY

by Dr. Brian Leverich

RootsWeb exists to allow you to interact with other people who
share your interests. We also often preserve those
interactions, so you can readily see and learn from discussions
that have occurred in the past.

To be able to provide you with the best possible environment, we
ask you to agree to the following before using our
facilities:
1.HAVE FUN. Well, we can't require you to have fun, but we
really think you should.
2.YOU OWN YOUR POSTS. When you post messages to lists, message
boards, and other facilities at
RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright
law. ( Private messages may not be posted to the list - this is a
violation of US Copyright Law! Anyone posting private messages to the
list without written permission will be removed from the list... just
going by the law folks) All email is automatically copyrighted under US
Law and international email under the Berne Convention)
3.ROOTSWEB MAY ARCHIVE AND REDISTRIBUTE. So we can provide
current and future users with
access to your posts, by posting here you do give RootsWeb a
permanent license to archive and redistribute
those posts. This policy may be superseded in specific
circumstances by other commitments made by RootsWeb.
4.POST ONLY MATERIAL YOU DO OWN. When you post to RootsWeb, you
must either be the copyright
holder (that basically means you wrote it), have written
permission from the copyright holder, or the material must clearly be in
the public domain. If printed (Before 1911 your ok!!)
5.YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR POSTS. If you post anything that
results in RootsWeb being sued,
you are responsible for any costs you incur. We may also hold
you responsible for any costs we incur defending
ourselves.
6.YOU SHOULD NOT DECREASE THE ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS. Your posts
should not flame or
otherwise harass other users and should be reasonably on topic
for the areas where they appear, and you should
otherwise adhere to the principles of netiquette.

In addition the following apply:

1: No Virus warning messages of any kind - immediate removal from list.
These warnings are useless and unneeded on the list because attachments
cannot be sent through the lists as rootsweb filters these messages out
so you cannot get a virus from the list! Please No Virus Warnings ---
Only the listmanager is permitted to post these and then only if told to
do so by Rootsweb Staff! The reason being - why scare people needlessly.
Many unsubscribe because of these false warnings.

2: No Spam - any sales, pornography or other types of spam posted to the
list will be dealt with not only by listmanager but by Rootsweb Tech
Staff as well. The offenders ISP will also be notified as will Internet
Abuse who track these things. Needless to say imediate removal from list
as well.

3: Keep subject on topic, related to events, people and areas of New
Haven County Ct. It's fine to post about a possible person or event that
may have occured in the county but completely off topic subjects are not
to be posted to the list. Repeated requests to stop posting off topic
subjects will end up in posts being screened by listmanager which means
I read them and then allow them to go through or or not. I'd hate to do
that...... it's a real pain!

I have 11 lists and never had to unsub or put anyone on restricted
posting yet and I dont want to, ever! I like all of you folks, a little
light on posts lately but your a great group, lets keep it that way.

Now back to genealogy and history lessons..... we could really use more
history! I know very little about the county and 60% of my ancestors
came through New Haven!

John
