I would not be suprised at your gggraandfather was a gun maker all his life.
New Haven was the home of Winchester rifles, A.C. Gilbert who was well known
as a train maker, but during WWII they converted to rifles. My parents
worked there during the war, but I remember the huge A.C. Gilbert sign at
the beginning of the drive way.

What line of Hotchkiss was your earliest family?
