(It's probably worth noting that Ansonia was originally called Birmingham,
and was part of the town of Derby until 1889.)
William Selby was born in 1811 in Belfast, Ireland to William and Mary
Selby. William the younger married Marie Caton (Keating) on 21 May 1836 in
Belfast. Marie had been born to Thomas and Maria Caton (Keating) on 21 May
1816.
At some point the family lived near/at Staleybbridge, near Manchester,
England. I don't know anything about their passage to America.
Their children were:
Mary Selby b. 4 May 1837, married Alfred Barnett
Fannie Selby
Eliza Selby who was naturalized on 18 Mar 1871 and died in 1896. Eliza is
also buried at Pine Grove.
Thomas Selby (Selbie) b. 1 Aug 1848 immigrated in 1861 to America and was
naturalized on 16 Oct 1868 in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut. Married Annie
Bowen (see earlier post) 7 May 1872 in Derby and was working as a Wire
Drawer in 1880. By 1900 he and his family lived at 21 Arch in Ansonia, and
by 1910, he was working as a machinist in the brass factory. Thomas died
on 21 Jan 1911 in Ansonia, and is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery.
Thomas and Annie's children were:
Anna Louise Selby
29 Jun 1873 - 12 Jul 1953 (buried at Pine Grove)
William Henry Selby
16 Jun 1875 - 20 Aug 1927 (buried at Pine Grove)
In 1900, the younger William was working as a machinist.
Fanny Mary Selby
8 Jul 1877 - 16 Sep 1968 Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut (buried at
Pine Grove)
In 1922, Fanny was working as bookkeeper at Ansonia Flour and Grain Comp
Lena Emily Selby
12 Sep 1879 New Haven County - 25 Jul 1944 Ansonia (buried at Pine Grove)
married Blackham
Arthur Richard Selby
6 Sep 1881 New Haven County - 17 Jul 1949 Ansonia (buried at Pine Grove)
Arthur's first marriage, to my great-grandmother Harriet Belle Wallace (FJ
Wallace's daughter from an earlier post) was short-lived. They were
married on 3 Oct 1911 and Harriette and their baby daughter (living) were
back in Mr. Wallace's home by 1920. Later, sometime after 1935, Arthur
remarried Edith B. <Unknown>.
Thomas Edward Selby
Nov 1883 - 1966
Kittie Elizabeth Selby
9 Mar 1891 New Haven County - 23 Feb 1989 Cheshire
married Andrews
Helen Bowen Selby
12 Jul 1895 New Haven County - Dec 1980 North Haven
married Matthias
