Subject: [CTNEWLON-L] Josiah WAID (WADE) and More
Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 01:08:00 -0400

This is what I have learned or been told about him:
He was born to Jonathan WAID (WADE) and Hannah WAID (RANSOM) abt. 1746
in Lyme, New London Co., CT. - IGI Record - Latter Day Saints Web Page Film
numbers 442569 and 458873.
As far as I can tell at this point, the name WAID was not the consistent
spelling until Pember WAID, who I have been told by several people was the
son of Josiah. Another son of Jonathan and Hannah's, Increase - according
to the Compendium of American Genealogy - also spelled his name WAID.
Pember's grandson, Francis C. WAID of Crawford Co., PA, has written a
book in which he gives the names of Pember and Anna (LORD) WAID'S children,
and some of their spouses and children. He mentions two places in CT for
Pember. One is Lyme and the other is Saybrook. Pember was a ship builder
and possibly worked at Essex (old Potapoug Quarter), because he said that he
saw the British burn the ship yard there in 1814. Shortly after - in 1817 -
he and his family moved to PA.
HEADS OF FAMILIES THE FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEN IN THE
YEAR 1790 CONNECTICUT, LITCHFIELD COUNTY, LITCHFIELD TOWN, page 62
Name of head of family: Waid, Josiah
Free white males of 16 years and upward, including heads of families: 1
Free white females, including heads of families: 5
If this is the Josiah WAID that I am looking for, this census is missing any
reference to Pember who turned 16 in January of 1790. Some of the records
handed over to me by my great aunt said that Pember came from Litchfield
Co., but that information seems to be in error. I do know that Pember's son
Ira Canfield WAID returned to Lyme and Saybrook CT for a visit in 1864, and
there visited with three aunts - one of whom was his mother's sister, Lois
(LORD) TIFFANY. The other two are unnamed.
Pember's grandparents, I believe, were John and Mercy (PEMBER) WADE. It
seems that several of their children and children's children named a male
child Pember. John WADE appears to be the son of John and Elizabeth (DURANT
) WADE. John and Mercy named a son Durant. According to the Compendium of
American Genealogy, John WADE was the older son of Nicholas WADE of
Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA. John migrated to Lyme, met Elizabeth, and got
married - estimate abt. 1680-1683.
If anyone can help me sort all of this out, and also help me discover
the spouse of Josiah, I would greatly appreciate it.
David
