Michael,
You sent me some information on the Durants awhile back. Since then I
have located some information that may be of interest to you.
1. There appears to have been two George Durants in the States at the
same time. One settled in MA and then CT. The other arrived in Boston,
went to VA, and then to NC. Much of the information in IGI records seems to
confuse these two individuals. Another confusing matter is that they named
their children with like names.
For the George of NC, his family Bible is preserved in the Historical
Collections at College Hill, NC. In 1661, he purchased 3,333 acres of land
from the Indians at what is still known today as Durant Neck on Albemarle
Sound, Perquimans Co., NC. Records continue for this George, indicating
that he did not leave NC as some have speculated.
The George of MA first appears in Colonial records in 1662 as a tenant
on Dexter property in Malden, MA. In 1663, he received a large portion on
land along the Connecticut River in Middletown, CT.
2. The tomb inscription on Richard's grave in Bodmin, Cornwall, England
proves that he and Katheren could not be the parents of either George.
Richard died May 20, 1632 at 79. His first wife, Jowdy, died in 1589 and
was buried in the family fgrave on May 22, 1589. She gave birth to 6
children. Katheren, Richard's second wife died in 1608, and was buried in
the family grave on December 22, 1608. She gave birth to 13 children. One
effigy on the tomb indicates that there may have been a 14th child that was
dead at birth. The IGI records indicate that Richard and Jowdy were married
in January of 1582. So she would have given birth to six children in seven
years. The IGI records indicate that Richard and Katheren were married
November of 1590. She would have given birth to 13 or 14 children in 18
years.
Again, thank you for the information you shared with me. I hope what I
have shared helps you, if this is a family that you are tracking.
David
