Speaking of cemeteries, I received this message from Lisa Palone who
agreed that this info should be shared with the list:
*****
Just an F.Y.I. . . . . . When I was working on my grandmother's
geneology,
I found that many of them were buried in the mid-1800s at Cedar Grove
Cemetary in New London. The administrative office there at the entrance
of
the cemetary has records going very far back. I found relatives I
didn't
even know existed until I saw them on the plot cards. They were buried
next
to relatives I was inquiring about, but didn't have names on their
gravestones. Even the cause of death, date of death, and date of burial
is
on the plot card.
Also, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War have extensive records
of
Civil War veterans at Cedar Grove. I believe the fellow that completed
the
records is Alexander Prentice. I don't know him personally, but I ran
into
him in the New London Library Archives a few years ago and he obtained a
copy of my ancestor's record and at the bottom it states that he
himself,
Alexander Prentice, filled out the form in January of 1997. There is
information on section and plot number within Cedar Grove and
information on
my ancestor's military history.
Anyway. . . . I just wanted to pass along the information in case you
have
a volunteer interested in working on Cedar Grove. A lot of the
information
is out there in printed form. It's just a matter of compiling it.
All the best,
lisa
