Tonia,
Hopefully, the following information is responsive to your January 4th
query that refers to Rev. George Cotton and the town of Colchester in the
late 1700s. It is from two sources: Early Connecticut Marriages Prior
to 1800 by F.W. Bailey and a History of New London County Connecticut
compiled by D. Hamilton Hurd. This first source is a collection of seven
books in one volume.
>From Early Connecticut Marriages:
1. Middletown, Middlesex County, was incorporated September 1651, and named
in 1653. (Book 6, page 92)
2. The First Church in Middletown was organized November 4, 1668. (Book
6, page 92)
3. The marriage of George Cotton to Eliz Gilchrist on January 3, 1782 in
Middletown, Middlesex County is included in the records for The First Church
in Middletown. (Book 6, page 104)
4. Colchester, New London County, was named October 1699.
5. The First Congregational Church [of Colchester??] was organized December
20, 1703. (Book 3, page 97)
6. Rev. Ephraim Little is cited as the pastor of the First [Congregational??]
Church [of Colchester??] for the marriages that were recorded between the
years of 1732 and January 29, 1778. (Book 3, pages 97 through 108)
7. A Second Congregational Church of Colchester was organized at Westchester,
December 1729. (Book 3, page 97)
>From History of New London:
1. The [First??] Congregational Church, Colchester, was organized December
20, 1703 with Rev. John Buckley as pastor. (Page 395)
2. The Congregational Church, Westchester. Ecclesiastical Society at
Westchester was formed in 1728, and the church was organized in December
1729. (Page 396)
3. Rev. Judah Lewis was the pastor at the time it was formed. (Page 396)
4. Twelve pastors are listed for The Congregational Church, Westchester
from its founding through the publication of the book in 1882. George Cotton
is not included in the list. (Page 396)
The information contained in brackets [??] is not so stated in the source
documents. Rather, it reflects my conclusions regarding the topic. Accordingly,
this information may or may not be historically accurate and should be
further verified if critical to the accuracy of your work.
Good luck,
Jean
