Message Board Post:

Hello,
I'm trying to locate John SMITHs (my 6thGG) resting place. His son Lemuel, grandson Benjamin, and brother Francis were all buried in the Riverside cemetery in the Oneco section of Stirling, Windham Co. CT.

JOHN SMITH b. pre 1679 m. Plainfield, Ct., June 25, 1699 d. Oneco, Ct.? after 1725 (Yeoman and Representative) We don't know the date of John Smiths death, but assume that it was during 1749 as he was not mentioned in the will of his brother Francis, dated Dec. 20 of that year.

I also cannot locate John Smiths wife Susannah and daughter Ruth's markers. Ruth died in 1715 at 13 years old and maybe they are buried in the same location.

I've searched the Hale records for 24 cemeteries in Plainfield, 24 in Sterling, 22 in Canterbury, 3 in Voluntown etc. The Hale records do show the Riverside Cemetery as having four graves "unmarked" but I would think the four living children would have supplied an inscribed headstone(s).

Voluntown Land Rec. vol. 4, part 1, p. 124 states "On March 29,1729 John Smith deeded one and one half acres of land on the East side of the Moosup river to the inhabitants of Voluntown for a burying ground."
This may be the Riverside cemetery as 1733 is the earliest marker I have seen there.

John Smiths wife was SUSANNAH (HALL) SMITH b. Concord, Ma., 1680 d. Oneco, Ct.?
John and Susannah's Children are:
1) Susannah Smith b. Oct. 15, 1700. Married Jonas Shepherd of Plainfield May 29, 1722. d.?
2) Ruth Smith b. Sept. 19, 1702 d. Dec. 28, 1715, 13 years old
3) Elizabeth Smith b. July 30, 1706 m. Rev. Samuel Dorrance of Voluntown Aug. 1, 1726. d. pre 1753
4) John Smith b. Dec. 18, 1708. Married Phebe Pierce of Plainfield Nov. 24, 1736. d.?
5) Lemuel Smith b. Plainfield, Ct. Feb. 25, 1710-1711. (Yeoman) m. Martha Coit d. Sept. 21, 1759. BURIED IN RIVERSIDE CEMETERY, ONECO SECTION OF STIRLING CT.

The John Smith in Question is the son of John Smith of Taunton MA (aka "John Smith of the Ware")

Best, Evan Smith
