Perhaps somebody here might be able to help me. On July 27th, 1850, the Census enumerator in the “Town & City of New London”, New London County, Connecticut, counted Sarah C. Beckwith, age 9, born in Connecticut (approximate birth range of 1840-1841). She is living at the residence of Hannah Sprague (age 76), David Sprague (age 54, Mariner), Crandall Sprague (age 35, Mariner), Fred Beckwith (age 14), Ed Beckwith (age 12), Alonzo Smith (age 32, Mariner) and Lucretia Smith (age 33). (1850 Census Detail: 1850, Connecticut, New London County, New London, Page 85.) For the 1860 Census, Sarah (age 19, Milliner) is living at the home of Joseph A. Smith (age 40, Shoe Dealer) and his wife Lucretia H. Smith (age 38). (1860 Census Detail: 1860, Connecticut, New London County, New London, Page 88.) Sarah C. Beckwith marries John Marshall Ney (Jean Michel Neu) of Hartford between 1860 and 1864, who was born about 1836 in Petit Réderching, Moselle, Lorraine, !
France. He, in short order, became a wealthy businessman and politician in Hartford. The company he purchased and the family ran is still in business today. I need to know who her parents were and why she (and presumably her brothers) was living with the Spragues at the time of this census. Any help or information would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
Happy Holidays
