In 1865 several families fron Santo Domingo came to settled in Manzanillo, a
town in the southern coast of Oriente, Cuba when the spanish troops left that
island; among those who had served in the Spanish army there, were
Lcdo. Don Francisco Lavastida, military men: Valera, Heredia, Frometa, Tavel,
the brothers MARCANO, Modesto Diaz,, Maximo Gomes and other; when the first
uprising against the Colonial Government took place around Bayamo and
Manzanillo [ in Yara] on october 10 1868, these men joined the Cuban rebels.

Gral Luis Marcano defended the village of Jibacoa against the Spanish Army,
with 300 men who were joined by Maximo Gomez's column -- or batallion-- of 50
men armed with small rifles, and the rest with machetes only, after their
retreat from Yara. The battle at Jibacoa marked the beginning of the real
organization of Cuban troops for the "10 Years War".... [ ibidem, page 143]
Among the Manzanillo patriots who survived the War, and returned to the city
were Bartolome Maso Marquez, Francisco Javier de Cespedes, Manuel de Jesus
"Tita" Calvar, Manuel socarras, Angel Mestre, juan FErnandez Ruz, Juan Hall
figueredo, Enrique Suastegui, Manuel Codina Polanco, Jaime Santisteban,
Rafael Tornes Garcini, Jose Rafael Izaguirre, FELIX MARCANO.....

Francisco Marcano was among the men of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes y Quesada;
Cespedes appointed Luis Marcano as his Liut. Gral, on Oct 12, 1868; [148-49].
Later promoted to Genereal. He was married and was circa 40 years old at the
time, he had been Captain in Sto. Domingo, experienced in militaray matters,
owner of a prosperous sawmill in that country. [166]
Francisco Marcano as Brigadier; [148],.... Coronel, about 38 years old at
the time, married, also in the same buissness with his brother. He was a
recruiter officer for the Cuban army. [166 - 167]
Felix Marcano, was also Coronel in the Cuban Army, around 35 years old, also
married. [167]
