On the Narvaez [ the conqueror's ] family,
He was married to a Maria de Valenzuela, settled in Bayamo; and when he left
for his fatefl expedition to Florida, left her as guardian of their son, and
their properties. He had Encomiendas, land an indians in Bayamo, maybe in
other olaces in Cuba. Maria de Valenzuela had to sue Narvaez's only
surviving partner, the one who had remained in Cuuba to look after his
properties, because he tried to swindle her. Anxious for her husband she
recruited men to man, and armed, a ship that explored the Gulf coast of
Florida searching in vain for her husband.
