Subject: [CUBA-L] Cuban orphans & Valdes

Hi there everybody,
I just received some information from a family line in Cuba and I have some
questions that possibly someone on the list can answer. Ive been
researching my ggrandmothers line Berta Gonzalez-Noda (Noa), this is what
we were told by all the family members including her eldest son and a nice.
BUT, all the documents Ive received for both Berta (the second to the
youngest) and Angelita (the eldest) both say that they are Gonzalez-VALDES.
We asked one of Anglitas daughters where this Valdes comes from and she
tells us that her mother said that her grandfather was an orphan, and they
gave him the surname of Valdes. But that it should have been Noda (or Noa)
thats why all the documents say VALDES.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I thought that orphans were given the
surname of Gutierrez? Im probably way off, so I need your help. I searched
under google and didnt find much. Where could I find more information about
this and possibly a listing of different orphanages?
Also Bertas death Certificate says she was born (1900) in Artemisa, Cuba
and her eldest sister Angelita was born in Cayajabo in 1886. Does anyone
know of any orphanages in that area?
Maria Wencelsa de los Angeles Gonzalez born 1886
her parents were Zacarizs Gonzalez Guzman and Petrona Valdes Valdes
I estimate that they were born between 180-1870
Any help would be appreciated.
:-) annette
