Hi Carole.
Better late then never...when researching the board, I came across some
queries regarding the origin of the name Milo. My grandfather, a Milo,
discovered that the name originally came from the island Melos, otherwise
known as Milo. It is a Greek island, the very same where the statue of the
Venus de Milo was discovered (hence the name).
Back in Roman times, there was a senator called Titus Annius Milo, who once
was defended by the famous Cicero. The resulting speech was named Pro
Milone, and is still referred to in modern legal history.
When the Hugenotes where prosecuted in France, many families went to either
the Netherlands via Belgium, or England. Some kept their original name,
others had changed it to the French equivalent, Millot. The name can be
found from South America and North America to Eastern Europe and Australia.
They sure did like to get around, those Milo's!
Hope this has helped you a little.
Warm regards,
Saskia Steinhorst
