Dear Mr. Martinez-Ramos...You mention in your write-up that "we descend
from the equivalent of the Mayflower bluebloods of Cuban aristocracy and
nobility"
I too have enjoyed immensely looking at my genealogy and it has also become
my new found hobby. While researching Cuban family trees I have come up
with the most astonishing findings.....which is that many (most?) Cuban
families have Sephardic Jewish surnames...even though we all, I guarantee
you, have red blood. If you look up some of the surnames you mentioned
such as Pomares, Hurtado, Zaldivar, Figueroa, Vidal.....all are listed in
the Sephardim.com site. But actually, if you read the other names that
accompany these, it reads like the "Who is who in Cuban families" The
Spanish Inquisition that outsted the Jews from Spain and Portugal (as you
mentioned that Pomares were) took place in the 1400 and 1500's which of
course are the years that Cuba was conquered by "Spaniards" (it is even
said that Christopher Columbus most likely was Jewish as well! and that
many of the seamen were....how better escape the inquisition than in
Columbus ships. Why else did the Spanish put!
two offices in the Cuban island to persecute in the name of the
inquisition, if no Jews had come to Cuba? You will also find that most
names that end in "ez" are Sephardic Jewish.....as a matter of fact, you
may find it interesting to look up both of your surnames "Martinez" and
"Ramos" since they are both there. But if you really read what happened in
those times, I wouldn't want to be associated with the "blue bloods" (no
more than I would want to be associated with the priests pedophiles
today).....even the Pope has written an appology (to both!) I'm glad and
proud I'm of Sephardic roots and I hope you have your students feel proud
of their heritage.
