Because I was married to a Texan Gordon for 27 years, and my daughter is thus one, I've been interested in researching this matter for a long time. I was first surprised when I discovered the Gordons in Spain even before the country existed. Apparently, one or more knights named Gordon moved to Spain at a very early stage of the Christian Reconquest of the peninsula (perhaps around the year 1000). Throughout the history of Spain the surname Gordon has been highly regarded, being part of the highest levels of Spanish society. I can't remember exactly where, but possibly in the Province of Leon, in northern Spain, there is a small town named Pola de Gordon. Nowadays the Spanish Gordon surname is accentuated on the last syllable, being thus written Gordn.

The Gordons also appear in Cuban society and history. They appear marrying into the "Havana branch of the Gonzlez de la Torre or de la Torre family." Until now, I have been unable to find the origin of an individual who was known as Colonel Gordon, and who was a member of Cuban War of Independence (and Ten Year War) hero, General Antonio Maceo's immediate staff. In basically the two main wars of independence (the two mentioned), many Confederate officers and soldiers fought on the side of the Cubans, although some did fight on the side of Spain. What is more, I understand that the Cuban cavalry tactics were almost equal to the Confederate cavalry tactics.

Under the "Gonzalez de la Torre" heading, in the books titled Li bro de Familias Cubanas, of the Conde de Jaruco, which you can find in several Miami libraries, you will find the Gordon reference.
