If I recall correctly, when I first started trying to obtain some information about one of my great-grandfathers, Domingo Campos Prez, who had been a lieutenant colonel who was sent to Cuba during the Ten Year War (1868 - 1878), I did not find his name in a book/list which is at the Richter Library's Cuban/Spanish Section of the University of Miami. This list has thousands of names. I believe that it was titled something regarding the Ejrcito de las Amricas. However, I did obtain his military file (which of course included some biographical information) from the Archivo Histrico Militar in Segovio. He had been born in northeastern Galicia (can't remember the name of the small town right now). When he retired from the Spanish Army, after that war, he was named Alcalde (mayor) of Palmira, where I understand that he is buried. It was in that region that he had fought during the war. His first wife had died, and he married my great-grandmother, Elvira Martnez Cla!
velo, who
was from that area.

His oldest son, Manuel (being of course more Spanish than Cuban) moved back to Spain after Cuba became a republic. I wish that I could contact that branch of the family.

The Spanish soldier records are in the Spanish Archives in Simancas and
Segovia. Visit http://www.cubagenweb.org/mil/index.htm for details on the
index books you can consult.
