There are nearly 400 Concellos (Counties) in Galicia's four provinces; A
Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra. In my opinion; location, location, and
location, is the most important fact to establish in any individual's search for
key life events documents.
Please be sure that you exhaust all possible searches in Cuba for documents
which might indicate the location in Galica of your ancestor's birth, other
wise you will have an insurmountable up hill challenge.
Having said this there are 51 Dean listed in Telefonica's residential white
pages; 31 in A Coruña, 19 in Lugo, 1 in Ourense and none in Pontevedra. There
are a total of 361 Dean listed in all of Spain with a first (paternal) or
second (maternal) surname of Dean.
According to Gutierre Tibon the etymology of the surname is the latin
"decanus" meaning the most senior of the canonicos. The surname does not have a
Spanish equal but it does have a Catalan, Dega; Italian, Decani; English, Dean;
and French, Doyen.
