Jo Bethyn,
My mother is Sibhin (Johanna) Cuffe (Fogarty). Her Father was William Cuffe, a grandson of Maurice. Maurice Died on the 1st April 1911 aged 92. His wife Johanna died 22 Jan 1889. His son Michael died the previous year (1910) as a result of a fall from a horse. He would have been a brother of Ellen. Maurice's fathers name was Michael; he was born in 1770 and died in 1848. His wife's name was Margaret; she out-lived him by 21 and died in 1869. I have copies of death certificates for all of the above except for the original Michael. As his death was towards the end of the Great Famine 1846 -48, there is possibly no official record but I have found the headstone. State registration of births, marriages and deaths was not required in IRL before 1860. Before that date the only comprehensive church records are for members of the established church (COI). Irish Census records existed from the 1830's, however a quantity of these were pulped by the authorities during WW1 for pa!
per. Whatever records survived were destroyed by fire in the Four Courts during the Civil War. Partial records exist for the 1901 census and I have a copy for the Cuffe Family Bishopstown. The 1911 Irish Census is now online at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/.Regards
Edmond.
