I recently announced my grandfather's 99th birthday and got a huge
response of congratulations from you kind folks on CRR. It is not
necessary to send another response, but I did think you would find it
interesting that Simon & Annie Petree (my grandparents) will be
celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary the 16th of this month. They
were married in 1918 when he was 19 and she was 16. They have lived to
see g-g-g grandchildren (we have 6 living generations--how unusual is
that?).
Tuesday night, they were interviewed on channel 8 News, Knoxville, TN.
If you saw the interview, you know that Simon & Annie are a very unique
couple. Considering that they raised 11 children in a coal-mining camp in
the middle of a depression, their sense of humor is amazing. Annie's
response to the question of her first impression of Simon was "I thought
he was the prettiest man I had ever seen!" And Simon said the best way
to keep a woman around for 80 years was to "kiss them ever now and then."
I believe their giving God the credit is the secret of their successful
marriage.
