Several years ago I had applied to Washington Archives for copy of my
ggrandfather's Union army record. I knew he was buried in the National
Cemetery in Washington Co. Ark, had been there and had a picture. The told
me they didn't have it. I phoned and insisted and some man told me they
would search further.

A few weeks later the Vet. Admn. office in Nashville, Tn. phoned to tell me
they had it and I was at work. The next day I received a letter telling me
they had the record and would send it. I sent a check for $9.? and three
days later received a packet of almost two inches of papers. Why they
ended up in that office I'll never know. He died in Arkansas where he had
lived since shortly after the war ended. He had lived originally in east
Tennessee.

The idea from my point of view is that one can expect the records wherever
you can find the! I always tell people though to be persistent with your
request, especially if you are sure there should be records.

found that the "XC" was some sort of "secret classification".....that
evidently the files had been sealed to anyone but immediate family and that
was also the reason that they were "in the custody of the Vet. Adm. " and
not the NARA. Does anyone else remember that?
