KRISTINA ETHEL MAE LAWS, the infant daughter of Dallas and Rebecca (Hughes)
Laws was born on June 8, 2000 and passed away Tuesday June 20, 2000 in the
University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. She was preceded in death
by her maternal great-grandparents, Alice Hughes, Ethel Helton and Mae Gray,
paternal great-grandparents Charles and Della Laws, her great-grandmother,
Lucy Warren and one aunt, Wanda Nevel. Survivors include her parents, Dallas
and Rebecca Laws of Barbourville; maternal grandparents, M.C. and Lucy Helton
of Barbourville; maternal grandfather, Calvin Gray of Barbourville; paternal
grandparents, Brenda Laws and Billy Wilson of Artemus and Curtis and Debra
Laws of Harrogate, TN; paternal great-grandparents, Melvin and Georgia Cox of
Pineville; maternal great-grandfather, Burchell Hughes of Barbourville; one
uncle, Kevin Hughes of Barbourville; five aunts, Kim Laws and Tracy Laws,
both of Artemus, Jessica Gray of Dewitt, Alicia Hughes of Barbourville and
Natasha of Barbourville; her great aunts and uncles, Carol and Jerry Taylor
and kids Travis, Kevin and Tara and Paul and Teresa Hughes of Barbourville
and Diane and Fred Wilder of Cincinnati, Ohio. Funeral services for Kristina
were conducted on Saturday, June 24, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the Hampton Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Allen Lord and the Rev. Donnie Mills officiating.
Pallbearers were Kevin Hughes, Brian Hughes, Kevin Taylor, Travis Taylor,
Bryan Mills and Jeremy Gray. Honorary pallbearers were staff of the UK
Medical Center. Interment followed in the Tanyard Cemetery at Smokey. Hampton
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
QUENTIN MILLS, 78, of Barbourville, passed away Monday, June 19, 2000 in the
Knox County Hospital. He was the son of the late Leonard and Sudie Bright
Mills, born on October 28, 1921 in Knox County. He was a veteran of World War
II and served in the European Theater from 1942-1945. Decorated, he received
the Bronze Star on two occasions, the Purple Heart, and various other medals.
He served with the Red One, First Infantry - First Division and he also
served in the Battle of the Bulge. He was retired from Budd Wheel in Michigan
and attended the Springfield Baptist Church at Bimble. In 1941, he united in
marriage with Maudie Mae Mills in Pineville and to this union four children
were born. Survivors include two sons, S. Ray Mills and wife Zollie of
Knoxville, Tenn. and Dennis Mills and wife Mickey of Sterling Heights, Mich.;
one daughter, Darlene Gallagher and husband Robert of Canton, Mich.; two
sisters, Sally Broughton of Knox County and Geneva Isham of Illinois; one
brother, Flem D. Mills of Barbourville; several grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his
passing. Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral
Home Thursday, June 22 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis Chesnut and the Rev.
Timothy Phipps officiating. He was laid to rest in the Obie Mills' Cemetery
at Stinking Creek. Knox Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
IRENE FRANCES VALENTINE DOAN MCDONALD, 73, of Barbourville, was born in
Hazard on August 5, 1926 to the late Edward Valentine and Lillie Merida
Valentine. She died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at her residence in Barbourville.
She was a former factory worker in Chicago, Illinois. She united in marriage
with William Thomas Doan who preceded her in death. On February 14, 1970 she
united in marriage with Lawrence McDonald. Survivors include her husband,
Lawrence McDonald of Barbourville; her children, Clifford Ray Doan of
Lynette, Calif., Aaron D. Doan of Sandwich, Ill., Betty Jean Krusell and
husband Keith of Saint Charles, Ill., Carol Sue Hendrickson and husband
Robert of Pontiac, Ill., Ethel Boulis and husband Robert of Clio, Mich. and
Judy Smith of Bradenton, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; and her brothers, Willie Valentine of Pinconning,
Mich., Perry Valentine of White Lake, Mich. and Caleb Valentine of Milford,
Mich. Funeral services were conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel,
Friday, June 23 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. M.A. Reese officiating. Interment
followed in the Carnes Cemetery at Turkey Creek in Knox County. Hopper
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
JESSIE L. SMALLWOOD, 72, of Cannon, the widow of Noah Smallwood Jr., was born
in South Carolina on January 6, 1928 to the late George Brown and the late
Hattie Napier Brown, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2000 at her home. On May
14, 1977 she united in marriage to Noah Smallwood, Jr. She was a homemaker
and was a member of the New Harvest Tabernacle Church. Survivors include her
daughter, Margaret Weeks and husband Mickey of Augusta, Ga.; her son, Holly
George Hawkins of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three step-daughters, Shirley
Broughton and husband Donald of Cannon, Joanne Bottoriff and husband Jerry of
Bimble, Helen Hill and husband David of Gray; three step-sons, Leroy
Smallwood of Gray, Leon Smallwood and wife Nancy of Gray, Dennie Smallwood of
Cannon; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren;
12 step-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral
services were conducted Monday, June 26 at 11 a.m. in the New Harvest
Tabernacle Church at Smokey with the Rev. Don Napier officiating. Burial
followed in the Smallwood-Broughton Cemetery at Cannon. Hampton Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
PAULINE JACKSON, 75, of Bimble, the wife of Basil Jackson, passed away
Wednesday, June 14, 2000 in the Knox County Hospital. She was born in Knox
County on May 5, 1925 to Hillary Thomas and Nora (Epperson) Thomas. She was a
homemaker and was a member of the Roadside Baptist Church. On July 6, 1946
she united in marriage with Basil Jackson and to this union four children
were born. Survivors include her husband Basil of Bimble; one daughter,
Brenda Miller of Bimble; two sons, Ronnie Jackson and wife Beulah of Whitley
City and Alvin Jackson of Williamsburg; two sisters, Flossie Davis and
husband Alfred Davis of Bimble and Ruth Hammons and husband Bill J. Hammons
of Florence; one brother, Randall Thomas and wife Louise of Norwood, Ohio;
seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and
friends to mourn her passing. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June
17 at 2 p.m. in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Russell Jones
and the Rev. John Partin officiating. Burial followed in the Carty Cemetery
at Girdler. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
CHARLES CALLEBS, 79, of the Callebs Creek Community, was born on May 20, 1921
at Baughman, Kentucky to the late Rev. Lawrence Callebs and Nettie Messer
Callebs. He died Thursday, June 22, 2000 in the Barbourville Nursing Home. He
was a member of the Dripping Springs Baptist Church and was a retired
construction worker. On October 14, 1939, he united in marriage to Bertha
Bright. Surviving Mr. Callebs, his daughter, Helen Christine Sams of Girdler;
his son, Terrell Callebs and wife Charlotte of Byron, Michigan; his
grandchildren; his sisters, Celia Jackson of Barbourville, Ernestine Bargo of
Dayton, Ohio and Allie McVey of Nashville, Tennessee; his brothers, Sie
Callebs and wife June of Piqua, Ohio, Jay Callebs and wife Mary Jane of
Warren, Michigan, Junior Callebs and wife Ada of Corbin, Clark Callebs and
wife Thelma of Flat Lick, Ed Callebs of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many nieces,
nephews, friends and neighbors. Funeral services for Charles Callebs were
conducted Sunday, June 25 at 2 p.m. in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Vernon Morris and the Rev. Earl Hammons officiating. Interment
followed in the Callebs Cemetery on Callebs Creek. The Callebs family have
suggested that contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in
loving memory of Charles Callebs. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
JODY THOMAS STEPHENS, 33, of Barbourville, the husband of Alice Stephens, was
born on October 10, 1966 in Fontana, California to Tom Stephens and Bernice
Merida Stephens, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2000 in the Knox County
Hospital. He believed in the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Stephens of Barbourville; four children,
Cody Allen Stephens, Nathan Darst, Nicole Darst, Natasha Darst, all of
Barbourville; his mother, Bernice Stephens of Barbourville; his father, Tom
Stephens of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Tom Stephens; his maternal
grandparents, James and Lillie Merida of Flat Lick; his paternal grandmother,
Anna Mae Snider of Hamilton, Ohio; and several aunts, uncles, nephews and
nieces. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 24 at 4:30 p.m. in
the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Philip Wynn officiating. Burial
followed in the Farley Cemetery at Himyar Hampton Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
CHARLES ELBERT HUBBARD, 69, of Louisville, passed away Wednesday, June 21,
2000 in the Hospice and Palliative Care of Louisville. He was the son of the
late Arthur and Lucy Mae Jones of Gray. He was a land surveyor with R.J. Roth
and Associates; also he was a decorated World War II Veteran, serving with
the Marines. Survivors include his wife, Rosa Hubbard; one son, Charles R.
Hubbard; three daughters, Carol E. Hubbard, Lynn McCutchan and Donna L.
Thomas; one sister, Florine Gladson; and five grandchildren. Funeral services
were conducted at Ratterman's Southside Drive in Louisville Friday, June 23
at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Roy Stepp officiating. He was laid to rest in the
Farris Cemetery at Gray. Knox Funeral Home was in charge of local
arrangements.
MAGGIE MCDONALD, 72, of Gray, the wife of Paul McDonald was born in Clay
County on March 16, 1928 to the late Ed Brumley and the late Dora Downey
Brumley and passed away Thursday, June 22, 2000 in the UK Medical Center. She
was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and was a homemaker. On July
17, 1945 she united in marriage to Paul McDonald and to this union six
children were born. Survivors include her husband, Paul McDonald of Gray;
four daughters, Bobbie Sue Hubbard and husband Eddie, Shirley Stewart and
husband George, Rita Grubb and husband Robert, Debbie Smith; two sons, Ralph
McDonald and Jimmy McDonald and Cassie, all of Gray; two sisters, Nancy Penn,
Edna Barbour and husband Raymond, both of Stamping Ground; one brother, Shade
Brumley and wife Barb of Grant County; 17 grandchildren; 27
great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a host of other
relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 26 at 2
p.m. in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Bargo and the
Rev. Jimmy Mason officiating. Burial followed in the Disney Cemetery at
Bailey Hollow. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
CECILLE MCDONALD, 88, of Gray, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2000 in the St.
Joseph Hospital in Lexington. She was the daughter of the late Clyde and
Mollie (Hendrickson) Acuff born to them on December 31, 1911 in Bell County.
On March 4, 1933 she united in marriage with John T. McDonald and to this
union three children were born. She was a retired social worker for the
Cabinet for Human Resources in Barbourville. She was a member of the First
Pentecostal Church of Barbourville. Survivors include one daughter, Frances
Moore and husband George of Bailey Switch; one son, Sherley V. McDonald and
wife Jean of Gray; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two
sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her
passing. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, June 23 at 2 p.m. in the
Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Troy Young and the Rev. Charles
Scalf officiating. She was laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery. Hampton
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
BRENDA GREGORY, 52, of Barbourville, the daughter of the late Albert and
Jospehine Gregory, died in the University of Kentucky Medical Center,
Tuesday, June 27, 2000. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hopper Funeral
Home is in charge of all arrangements.
RONALD LEE "Coonie" ELLIOTT, 59, of Gray, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2000
in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He was the son of
Linnie Wyatt Elliott and the late Jakie Elliott Jr. born on October 22, 1940
in Knox County. He was a retired licensed foreman with the Local 452 Plumbers
and Pipefitters. Survivors include his wife, Shelbia Jean Elliott of Gray;
his mother, Linnie Elliott of Gray; one son, Tim and Kim Elliott of Corbin;
one daughter, Tammy Elliott of Cannon and fiancee, Rodney Turner of Corbin;
one brother, Wayne Elliott and wife Ruby of Corbin; two sisters, Louise
Elliott Terrell and husband Joe of Woodbine and Judy Elliott Mills and
husband Charlie of Gray; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews;
among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. Funeral
services were conducted in the chapel of Corbin Funeral Home in Corbin
Wednesday, June 28 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Damon Helton and the Rev. R.P.
Edwards officiating. He was laid to rest in the Gray Cemetery.This is a
